5. Ioana Dascalu

Hello, my name is Ioana Dascalu and I'm 14 years old. I was born in Bucharest, Romania an July 9, 1984. I lived there for only three years and then my family moved to the USA I didn't know English and I was very afraid of having to go to school. I attended Burbank Blvd. Elementary from kindergarten to fifth grade. I would recommend this school to parents because it has great academics and nice teachers. From sixth to eighth grade I attended Holmes International Middle School.

While in the eighth grade at Holmes Middle school I was picked to be in an elective called C.R.P. which means College Readiness Program. C.R.P. was all about getting you ready for college and knowing the requirements needed for each college. My teacher was Mrs. Canning; she was a great teacher. This program that I was in helped me to bring my grades up and leanr what needed to be learned. We took field trips to colleges and we did community service projects. We were entered in many contests for our community service. We won two awards, which were the Clippers Team up Award and The environmental Education Award. One of the community projects we did was going to a retirement center and helping out with the residents. For this my picture was placed in the Daily News.

The goals I planned on accomplishing were keeping my grades up and learning as much as possible. Which I did accomplish. Next year for my freshman year I will be attending Birmingham High School and I hope to finish my senior year with honors and hope to be valedictorian. I'm going to try my hardest in achieving these goals because Birmingham has a lot to offer. I'm also hoping to be on the swim team and probably joining the Drama Club.

My pre-K through Elementary education began at Phillips Academy, which is owned by Mariana Cadia our own church member.

Afterwards I joined the Greek Orthodox School, known as St. Nicholas, in Northridge, California where one of my fellow class mates consisted of Gabriella Alecse. My last education series ended with high school.

My attendance at Notre Dame High School was for the full four years, where I received a good education and received academic awards as well as athletic awards.

Among the academic accomplishments, worthwhile mentioning are the following: All Academic Award, 2nd place for Poetry, JSRA - Journal of Student Research Abstracts Publication.

Awards deriving from football & track: Versity Letters from California State Championship Qualifier Award & from California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) for making it to State finals, and Certificate of Appreciation, signed by Mayor Richard J. Riordan.

I do believe Notre Dame has prepared me, both scholastically and athletically, to do well in my college education at Irvine, where I intend to persue in Biology.

My whole family is an active member and supporter of the Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles, California. For the last two years I have been the president of the Los Angeles Romanian American Orthodox Youth Organization, representing our Church to the AROY National Convention on two occasions.

On a social-cultural level, together with my brother, and many of this year's fellow graduates, I am a member of the Mugurel Romanian dance group, which performed, for many years, not only at the church's social doings, but competed with other ethnical dance groups in international festivals (Los Angeles, San Gabriel, San Diego and San Francisco, in California, and Phoenix, Arizona).

My family playing an active involvement in the Viitorul Roman Society, our group performed at various Society's social doings, and personally I have helped organize such doings.

I am proud to be of Romanian ancestry.

Hello, my name is Victor Robert Sarbu. I was born on July 8, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. I am the son of Marian and Aurelia Sarbu and the grandson of Dimitru and Maria Preda. I graduated this year from St. Nicholas, and plan to follow in my brother's footsteps by attending Notre Dame High School. I Florin is my older brother, I let you read more about him this time. You will be surprised in four years from now about my achievements. Till then, take care and blessings.

10. Sean M. A. Tallungan

It all started not too long ago in the little city of Burbank. It was the winter of '79. I was born on the 22nd of November. I went to Notre Dame High School. That is when I started running cross country and track, in which I was captain of Senior year. I also met Florin Sarbu (President of the Youth Group). We became best friends. He took me to a dance practice at his church (Holy Trinity). I loved it and I joined too. I started to attend mass; though I am not Romanian by birth I still feel its traditions and pride in my heart. I graduated Notre Dame this '98 along with Florin and many other friends.

My plans for the future are that I am going to do a semester at CSUN and then go to Indiana and attend Holy Cross Liberal Arts College. Moving will be hard because I will miss all of my close friends like Gabs and Claudia, my family and my girlfriend Nessie, but I want to be proud and make them proud of me.
